What Is AQUALYX® Used For?

AQUALYX® is used for localized or spot removal of fat from specific areas of the body. These include:
  • Back
  • Chin
  • Hips
  • Knees
  • Stomach
  • Thighs
AQUALYX® works by altering the surface tension of the fat cell membrane, increasing its permeability. An ultrasound device is then applied over the skin in the targeted region, causing the movement of liquids both inside and outside of the fat cells.  This causes fat cells to balloon and break up, leading to the drainage of microdroplets of fatty liquid into the body. These are then metabolized through the body’s natural lymphatic system. AQUALYX® is also used to treat pseudo-gynecomastia in men. This is a condition where extra fat tissue is deposited in the breast region, giving men the appearance of female breasts.  It’s important to note that AQUALYX® is not a weight loss solution. It is suitable for the reduction of small, stubborn pockets of fat, not large-scale fat reduction.

When Not to Use AQUALYX®

AQUALYX® is not indicated for use in individuals who:
  • Are pregnant
  • Are lactating/breastfeeding
  • Are diabetic or have lipodystrophy (complete or partial loss of and/or abnormal distribution of fat tissue in targeted areas of the body)
  • Are taking blood-thinning medication (such as warfarin)
  • Have autoimmune conditions such as scleroderma
  • Have liver or kidney disease (since extra fat processing can overwork the liver)
AQUALYX® is also contraindicated in individuals who are allergic to any ingredients of the treatment, such as:
  • Polymer from 3, 6-Anhydro-L-Galactose and D-Galactose (0.5%)
  • Buffer systems (4.2%)
  • Sodium salt of (3α, 5α, 12α) - 3, 12-dihydroxy-5-cholan-24-acid (7.5%)
AQUALYX® should also not be used for individuals under 18 or above 60 years of age, as well as patients who are clinically obese.

AQUALYX® Administration Technique

AQUALYX® should be administered only by a licensed medical professional after thorough consultation with the patient. The general procedure of the treatment is as follows:
  1. The doctor administers a local anesthetic before the treatment. In some cases, you may mix in the anesthetic with the AQUALYX® solution and inject it together. Both methods help minimize patient discomfort during the procedure.
  2. You then inject the AQUALYX® solution into the targeted area of the body. You may use an ultrasound device in conjunction to assist the dissipation of fat cells.
The process takes about half an hour and can be repeated anywhere from two to eight times depending on the number of small pocket fat tissues to be reduced. There is a gap of three to four weeks between each treatment.  Once the solution dissolves the unwanted fat, the effect is thought to be permanent. However, gaining weight following the procedure can diminish the results.

AQUALYX® Side Effects

AQUALYX® side effects are mild and generally last for only three to six days. The most common side effects include:
  • Transient nodules (16.36%)
  • Pain lasting more than 48 hours (48.54%)
  • Light bruising (72.58%)
  • Swelling (88.76%)
Complications can occur in rare cases, especially due to improper use. More severe side effects include:
  • Allergic reactions (0.003%)
  • Permanent skin nodules (0.005%)
  • Hyperpigmentation (0.002%)
  • Permanent paresthesia (0.01%)
  • Skin irregularities and scarring (0.03%)
  • Skin necrosis (0.01%)

AQUALYX® vs. Competition

AQUALYX® is not the only fat-dissolving injection on the market. Here’s how it compares to competitors:
  1. BELKYRA™

BELKYRA™ (also known as KYBELLA™) is an injectable treatment used to dissolve targeted fat cells. It is currently the only FDA-approved fat-melting treatment. Both injections work similarly, but BELKYRA™ is used only for eliminating stubborn fat under the chin, while AQUALYX® can target fat in other areas of the body such as the thighs, stomach, back, and hips.
  1. CoolSculpting

CoolSculpting is an FDA-approved fat reduction treatment. It is a non-invasive procedure that works by bringing the temperature of fat cells down and permanently destroying them.  CoolSculpting is better suited for fat reduction in larger areas, while AQUALYX® treatments are more precise, targeting smaller areas of fat deposition.  Both treatments have permanent effects but CoolSculpting is quicker (typically one session lasting an hour), while an AQUALYX® treatment can take up to eight sessions to complete.

Where Can I Buy AQUALYX®?

AQUALYX® was first developed by Professor Pasquale Motolese, president of the Italian Society of Aesthetics and Medicine, in 2009. It is manufactured by the Italian firm Marllor, which has been distributing AQUALYX® since 2013.  If you’re looking to order AQUALYX® online, reach out to our experts at Doctor Medica.
