NEUROBLOC®, also known as MYOBLOC®, is an injectable form of botulinum toxin type B, made from a purified neurotoxin produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacterium. NEUROBLOC® and MYOBLOC® are similar to botulinum toxins like BOTOX® and DYSPORT® except that they come from a different strain of bacteria. NEUROBLOC® and MYOBLOC® are approved for treating the medical condition cervical dystonia although some doctors might use them off-label for cosmetic purposes.
NEUROBLOC® and MYOBLOC® are neurotoxins, and they work by inhibiting the release of acetylcholine from nerves. This means the nerves are not able to communicate with the muscles, giving them a signal to move, so the muscles become relaxed. Cervical dystonia is characterized by muscle spasms in the neck that cause an abnormal head position and pain, so when you inject NEUROBLOC® and MYOBLOC® into the neck muscles, the spasms are reduced. This allows the head to return to its natural position and reduces the pain that the position problems had caused.
Cervical dystonia, also called torticollis, can be painful for patients that suffer from the condition. As their muscles constantly spasm, they find themselves with their neck twisted on an odd angle and their head in an unusual position. This can not only look and feel awkward, but it can be painful. NEUROBLOC® and MYOBLOC® can effectively treat cervical dystonia by reducing the muscle spasms. As the patient's head returns to a more normal position, they experience less pain and can live their lives more comfortably.
NEUROBLOC® and MYOBLOC® may cause side effects similar to other botulinum toxins. Common NEUROBLOC® and MYOBLOC® side effects include flu-like symptoms, cough, runny nose, headache, dizziness, drowsiness, back or neck pain, anxiety, sensitivity to light, dry mouth, dry eyes, nausea, indigestion, sweating, muscle weakness at or near the injection site, and pain, tenderness, redness, or swelling at the injection site. More severe MYOBLOC® and NEUROBLOC® side effects requiring medical attention could include difficulty swallowing or breathing, wheezing, shortness of breath, chest pain, irregular heartbeat, blurred or double vision, drooping eyelid, paralysis, fever, chills, pneumonia, loss of strength, loss of bladder control, muscle weakness or dizziness, changes in speech, swollen hands or feet, vaginal irritation, bleeding at the injection site, or an allergic reaction including symptoms like a swollen mouth, lips, tongue, or face, a rash or hives, difficulty breathing, or tightness in the chest. There is a chance the toxin effects of NEUROBLOC® and MYOBLOC® could spread to other parts of the body and cause serious health issues and possibly death. Contraindications of NEUROBLOC® and MYOBLOC® include an infection at the injection site, an allergy to botulinum toxins or any ingredient in NEUROBLOC® and MYOBLOC®, pregnancy and breastfeeding.
