One of the most prominent differences between Fortelis and Juvederm is that Juvederm is a brand of dermal fillers and Fortelis (also known as Fortelis Extra) is a singular filler product from Anteis S.A.

Both Juvederm fillers and Fortelis are made of completely synthetic hyaluronic acid molecules. The molecules these fillers are manufactured via biofermentation, where bacterial cultures are left to ferment to produce hyaluronic acid molecules. These particles are then extracted and extensively purified before they are cross-linked into a viscoelastic injectable gel that is clear and transparent. The soft tissue implants of both of these brands are indicated to instantly correct numerous aesthetic imperfections, including dehydration, wrinkles, and loss of facial contours, depending on the dermal conditions they are indicated for. Both these brands of dermal fillers are completely biodegradable and are gradually metabolized by free radicals and enzymes in the body.

What is the difference between these fillers?

Following the biofermentation and extraction of hyaluronic acid molecules, Fortelis is produced by the cross-linking of these molecules via Cohesive Polydensified Matrix (CPM) Technology. This technology was developed and patented by Anteis S.A. and functions by cross-linking the molecules continuously, resulting in the presence of high-density and low-density zones in the filler gel. Fortelis is also processed via Extra Volumizing Elasticity (EVE) Technology. As a result, this filler has the right elasticity level, which, in turn, enables it to correct facial folds at the deep dermal layer. Since Fortelis is manufactured using CPM, the filler is considered equivalent to Belotero Intense, which also undergoes a similar manufacturing process using CPM. On the other hand, Juvederm fillers are either processed via Hylacross or Vycross Technology. The former involves reticulating hyaluronic acid particles of the same molecular weight together, while the latter involves cross-linking a majority (90%) of low molecular weight particles with only a slight (10%) amount of high molecular weight hyaluronic acid.

Juvederm implants and Fortelis are made of cross-linked and monophasic hyaluronic acid. Because of this, these fillers can be injected easily into the skin to deliver long-lasting improvements. That being said, Fortelis can be further categorized as monophasic and polydensified, while Juvederm fillers are monophasic and monodensified. This major difference in gel texture is made possible due to the amount of cross-linking done. In contrast to Juvederm fillers, which are cross-linked only once, Fortelis is made of a single phase of hyaluronic acid that is cross-linked repeatedly via CPM technology. As a result, Fortelis does not have a uniform molecular weight and is not uniformly cross-linked either. Fortelis also has a generally lower viscosity compared to other brands of filler. Thus, Fortelis can be injected much more smoothly into the skin, which allows for a more homogenous intradermal distribution.

When to use Fortelis vs Juvederm

Fortelis, with its remarkable volumizing power and elasticity, is ideal for correcting deep-set facial depressions that are caused by aging or even accidents. Not only that, patients who are suffering from the loss of facial tissues and contours can be treated using this filler. Besides that, thin and shapeless lips can also be plumped and sculpted using Fortelis thanks to its perfectly adapted elasticity that can withstand various mouth movements. On the other hand, Juvederm encompasses of a wide range of fillers with varying degrees of hyaluronic acid concentrations and gel textures. As a result, this brand is very versatile in what it can treat; in fact, this versatile brand can correct the following aesthetic imperfections:

  1. Premature aging signs (e.g. dehydration, lack of skin radiance, and fine lines, etc.);
  2. Superficial, moderate, and deep-set facial wrinkles;
  3. Loss of facial contours;
  4. Sunken facial regions;
  5. Acne scars;
  6. Non-surgical augmentation of lips, nose, chin, and earlobes.

Which filler lasts longer?

While non-crosslinked hyaluronic acid is renowned for its potent hygroscopic property, it is prone to premature degradation. This is because it will be metabolized quickly by free radicals and enzymes present in the body once injected into the skin. Hence, cross-linking the hyaluronic acid molecules protect the biodegradable gel from untimely disintegration. The manufacture of Fortelis claims that the gel can deliver beautiful skin volumizing effects for approximately nine to 12 months. As for Juvederm fillers, they can last for a year or more once implanted into the skin, except for Juvederm Hydrate, which only lasts for about three months. Patients who want a longer lasting filler may opt for Juvederm fillers instead of Fortelis.

Can Juvederm fillers and Fortelis be injected with other fillers?

Yes, both these brands of soft tissue implants can be injected concomitantly with other fillers, preferably from the same range. For example, Anteis S.A. has developed a unique and effective technique called the Sandwich Technique to instantly correct pronounced and deep-set facial wrinkles via a combination of Fortelis and Esthelis. While Fortelis helps to instantly plump and lift depressed skin structures due to its extraordinary volume-enhancing effects, Esthelis functions to lift the skin surface by integrating seamlessly into the dermis layer. Areas treated with these fillers appear plumped and smooth whilst still looking natural.

As for Juvederm fillers, they can also be combined with each other and even with other dermal procedures to deliver more comprehensive treatment solutions to patients. For example, many experienced aesthetic practitioners administer Botox, a type of muscle relaxing medication, together with Juvederm Volbella to erase laugh lines. Not only that, Juvederm Volbella can be paired with Juvederm Vollure to subtly plump the lips while getting rid of parentheses lines framing the mouth; as a result, the treated areas end up looking plump and rejuvenated.
