FAQ
NEXPLANON® is a radiopaque, progestin-only subdermal contraceptive implant that contains 68 mg of etonogestrel, a synthetic hormone that prevents pregnancy. It is a long-acting reversible contraceptive (LARC) that provides effective birth control for up to 3 years. The implant is 4 cm long and 2 mm in diameter, made of ethylene vinyl acetate, and is inserted under the skin of the non-dominant upper arm using a pre-loaded sterile applicator.
The device works by suppressing ovulation, increasing cervical mucus viscosity, and altering the endometrial lining, thus reducing the likelihood of fertilization and implantation. Its radiopaque marker (barium sulfate) allows for easy detection via X-ray, improving clinical safety during localization and removal.
NEXPLANON® must be inserted subdermally by a trained healthcare professional under sterile conditions.
