What is CIMZIA® Used For?
This medication is used to treat Crohn’s disease rheumatoid arthritis, plaque psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, and non-radiographic axial spondyloarthritis in certain patients. CIMZIA® works to reduce inflammation and improve symptoms by blocking a TNFa protein. In autoimmune conditions like the ones mentioned above, inflammation can be caused or worsened when TNF is released in the body. Since CIMZIA® is classified as an anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF) biologic, it is usually administered as a subcutaneous injection. Its full effectiveness can range from 4 months to 1 year, based on the specific medical condition of the patient. CIMZIA® vs Competition
Medical professionals often have trouble deciding whether to buy CIMZIA® or Humira, since both medications are used for treating the same conditions. CIMZIA® contains the active drug cerolizumab pegol, while Humira contains the active drug adalimumab. Both of these medications are biologics and belong to a class of drugs called tumor necrosis factor blockers. Because of their similar use, and the fact that both are a type of TNF blocker, they have similar side effects. The main difference between these two medications is the fact that CIMZIA® is not currently approved for use in children, while Humira is approved in certain cases. Humira can be used on children to treat or ease symptoms of:- Moderate to severe Crohn’s disease in children ages 6 years and older
- Noninfectious uveitis in children ages 2 years and older
- Moderate to severe juvenile idiopathic arthritis in children ages 2 years and older
- Moderate to severe hidradenitis suppurativa in children ages 12 years and older
