Why is OZEMPIC® a Good Choice?

Studies show that diabetes increases the chance of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD). People with diabetes are 2 to 4 times more likely to develop cardiovascular disease and because the risk is so high, cardiovascular disease remains the most common cause of death in people with diabetes.  So, what is the adequate prevention? The best prevention includes regular medical check-ups, healthy lifestyle, regular control over cholesterol values (especially LDL or “bad” cholesterol), blood pressure management, and also maintaining target glucose level through medications, diet, and exercise.  One medication that has really set apart and has become a popular choice is OZEMPIC®. How does OZEMPIC® work and what is it used for? As a GLP-1 analog medication, it increases the levels of incretins which help the body to produce more insulin when needed and in adults with type 2 diabetes, OZEMPIC® improves blood sugar (glucose). OZEMPIC® medication also reduces risk of heart attack and stroke with adults suffering from type 2 diabetes with diagnosed heart disease. Note that OZEMPIC® is not indicated for patients with type 1 diabetes.

Is It Okay to Order OZEMPIC®  for Weight Loss?

OZEMPIC® is indicated for adults with type 2 diabetes and when used alongside a balanced diet and exercise, it helps improve blood sugar control. Obesity is a risk factor that contributes to cardiovascular diseases for people with type 2 diabetes, so it is advisable to keep body weight under control. While OZEMPIC® helps individuals with diabetes to lose more weight compared to other type 2 diabetes medications, it is not primarily a weight-loss drug. Even though it is prescribed off-label for weight loss, OZEMPIC® is not intended to be used as a medication for this purpose in healthy individuals and they shouldn’t take it without medical supervision and care. As a medical professional, you need to evaluate and prescribe this medication to individuals for whom it is appropriate.

Before you Buy OZEMPIC®: Good To Know

Ask your patient about taking oral anticoagulants like warfarin or other preventative medications. Require more frequent blood tests to assess their blood clotting ability. Also, keep in mind that OZEMPIC® prolongs gastric emptying and may affect the absorption of concomitant medications, so caution should be advised. Moreover, OZEMPIC® is not recommended to administer this medication during pregnancy. It is advisable to recommend contraceptives during OZEMPIC® administration. Furthermore, consider the use of other antidiabetic drugs in patients with a history of pancreatitis since OZEMPIC® has not been researched within that population.

OZEMPIC® Dosage and Administration

OZEMPIC® is taken as a once-weekly injection to manage blood glucose levels and HbA1c in people with type 2 diabetes. Start with the beginning dose of OZEMPIC® (0.25 mg once a week) for the first 4 weeks. This will help give your patient’s organism a chance to get used to the medicines. At week 5, the dose can be increased to 0.5 mg once a week. The maximum dose of OZEMPIC® is 2 mg once a week.

Safety Considerations

Consider the following when prescribing OZEMPIC® for patients:
  • Common adverse reactions are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and constipation.
  • Patients with elevated serum calcitonin or thyroid nodules should be evaluated by an endocrinologist.
  • Monitor for signs of pancreatitis (severe abdominal pain, with or without vomiting). Discontinue use of OZEMPIC® promptly if suspected, and do not restart if confirmed.
  • Inspect diabetic retinopathy, especially in patients with a history of the condition.
  • OZEMPIC® pens should never be shared between patients to prevent the transmission of blood-borne pathogens.
  • Check renal function, particularly in patients reporting severe gastrointestinal reactions.
  • Discontinue OZEMPIC® if serious hypersensitivity reactions happen, especially in patients with a history of such reactions to other GLP-1 receptor agonists.
  • If symptoms arise, suspect gallbladder disease.
  • Reduce insulin dose when initiating OZEMPIC® to minimize the risk of hypoglycemia.
