Supartz® is an FDA approved treatment that can be effective in treating the symptoms associated with osteoarthritis. A 2006 integrated analysis of five studies has shown a statistically significant reduction in pain and stiffness among test subjects after a five-week course of treatment. It has also been found to stimulate cartilage growth, which is especially helpful for patients with osteoarthritis because cartilage deterioration is one of the causes of the disease.

Supartz® is made up of sodium hyaluronate (hyaluronic acid), which is extracted from chicken combs. Supartz® is also made up of sodium chloride, dibasic sodium phosphate dodecahydrate, sodium dihydrogen phosphate dihydrate, and water.

When bone comes in contact and rubs with another, pain and swelling develop from the friction. Supartz® reduces this pain by replacing the synovial fluid of the joints through hyaluronic acid, which acts as a natural lubricant that cushions the joints and inhibit friction between the bone. Supartz®’s physiologic mechanism involves the suppression of gene expression in cartilage, which inhibits the cartilage degeneration that causes osteoarthritis in the first place.

Administering Supartz® products must be performed in accordance with strictly aseptic standards. Avoid the use of disinfectants containing ammonium salts, as it causes sodium hyaluronate to precipitate. Using a 22–23G needle, inject Supartz® intra-articularly into the joint. The full 2.5ml of the syringe must be injected in one joint. If you are treating both knees, use another syringe for the other knee. If there’s the presence of joint effusion, it should be removed prior to injection.

Supartz® can be performed in a simple in-office procedure that is likely to take less than thirty minutes. There is no need for your patient to be admitted in a hospital since no downtime is expected with this treatment. Your patient can resume normal, day-to-day activities after injection, but prolonged weight-bearing activities and strenuous exercises must be avoided 48 hours after the procedure.

Supartz® injectable is mainly used for treating symptoms related to knee osteoarthritis. It is a non-invasive procedure that has been proven to relieve knee pain, stiffness, and swelling among patients who are unresponsive to other known treatment options of knee osteoarthritis.

Because it is specifically designed for treating osteoarthritis in the knee, this treatment should be used for application on the knee.

When Supartz® is given in 5 sessions (with one-week intervals between the procedures) in accordance with recommended technique and precautions, reported benefits may last for up to 6 months. It is possible for patients to experience relief from symptoms after only three injections.

Patients suffering from osteoarthritis experience pain and other concomitant symptoms that make daily tasks challenging. Since the disease is irreversible and there is no cure available yet, these people will more likely spend a diminished quality of life; in fact, many of them will not be able to work for a living. As the disease progresses, total replacement surgery may be recommended. With the help of Supartz®, however, you can improve the quality of life for patients suffering from osteoarthritis without them having to undergo a knee replacement.

This treatment will be greatly beneficial to patients with knee osteoarthritis who have not positively responded to other conservative treatment options, including analgesics, corticosteroids, lifestyle changes, exercise regimen, and complimentary therapies. Supartz® injection can prevent or delay the need for total replacement surgery, as pain relief can potentially last for several months.

Sodium hyaluronate in Supartz® is similar to the synovial fluid present in joints, so allergic reactions are rare. However, if your patients are allergic to eggs, feathers, and other avian products, you should not give them this treatment. Additionally, Supartz® has potential side effects, including bruising, itching, redness, and pain at the site of injection. These side effects are temporary and usually resolve themselves within a few days. Some patients have also reported nausea, headaches, and vomiting.
