Botox is an injectable prescription medication that is used to treat a number of medical conditions and symptoms, as well as cosmetic issues. It contains botulinum toxin type A, a neurotoxin that effectively paralyzes muscles for a temporary amount of time.

Upon injection into a muscle, Botox interrupts the transmission of chemical signals between the muscle and the brain that instruct the muscle to contract, causing temporary paralysis or relaxation of the muscle.

Because of this, Botox is used to treat a number of medical conditions that are caused by muscle spasms or overactive or involuntary muscle contractions. Many of Botox’s uses, particularly its cosmetic uses, have been discovered as side effects of other treatments. Physicians and researchers are constantly discovering new ways in which this injectable can be used to help patients live happier, more comfortable lives.

How can Botox be used on the penis?

The use of Botox for the penis is being tested by doctors and scientists, and researchers have discovered that treatment can offer both cosmetic and functional benefits. Currently, Botox for the penis is being investigated to treat:

Flaccid penis length

A study was performed that tested the ability of Botox to treat men experiencing a hyperactive retraction reflex. This reflex causes the flaccid penis to retract in certain situations, such as during exercise, exposure to cold, or when the patient is experiencing stress. During the study, researchers injected Botox into the dartos muscle of the participants. At the conclusion of the study, 70% of participants reported that they experienced penile retraction less frequently and that the amplitude of the retraction was decreased. Participants also reported that they experienced an increase in flaccid penis length that amounted to an average of half an inch. This increase in length did not affect erect penis length.

Premature ejaculation

A study testing the ability of Botox to decrease premature ejaculation by increasing the amount of time prior to ejaculation was performed using rats as test subjects. Botox was injected into the bulbospongiosus muscle—a muscle that affects erections, orgasm, and ejaculation and sits at the base of the penis. Researchers found that the Botox injection helped to relax this muscle, thereby relaxing the contractions and ultimately delaying ejaculation. A clinical trial has begun to test the effectiveness of this treatment in humans.

Erectile dysfunction

A paper was recently published that argues that Botox may be an effective treatment for erectile dysfunction. Upon injection, the smooth muscles inside the erectile chambers of the penis are relaxed. Once relaxed, more blood is able to flow into the area, increasing the chance of erection. Multiple studies have shown this treatment to be effective, and human trials are expected to begin shortly.

How long does Botox treatment last?

The effects of Botox do not assert themselves right away, but typically provide optimal effects approximately two weeks following injection. The effects are temporary and typically last for three to six months. The duration of the results will vary by patient depending on a number of factors, including the age and lifestyle of the patient and the area being treated.

When treating with Botox, follow up injections are required to maintain results. However, because Botox for the penis is still undergoing preliminary testing and clinical trials, it is unknown whether treating the penis with Botox would be temporary or permanent.

The study relating to flaccid penis length reported temporary results lasting up to six months, while the current clinical trials for premature ejaculation are exploring whether repeat treatments are required or if a single treatment is suitable for the body to assert more control over ejaculation. Studies regarding erectile dysfunction that have been performed on animals and human subjects thus far suggest that results are temporary, lasting up to six months. It is likely that the longevity of results will vary according to the issue being treated.

What does treatment involve?

As with the longevity of the treatment, the manner in which Botox is administered varies according to the issue being addressed. It is likely that Botox treatment for the penis will involve injections into either the base or the area near the tip of the penis, or into areas along the shaft of the penis. Injections are administered via a very small needle.
