What Is BOCOUTURE® Used For?

BOCOUTURE® is a botulinum toxin type A formulation, known for its neuromuscular blocking properties. It selectively inhibits the release of acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction and paralyzes targeted muscles.

This mechanism is used in the treatment of various medical conditions characterized by excessive muscle activity, such as:

  • Cervical dystonia
  • Blepharospasm
  • Spasticity

With that said, BOCOUTURE® finds its major application in cosmetic dermatology. It temporarily diminishes facial wrinkles by relaxing specific facial muscles. The main areas it can help with are:

  • Vertical forehead lines or frown wrinkles
  • Glabellar lines between the eyebrows
  • Marionette lines between nose wings and corners of the mouth
  • Mimic wrinkles around the lips or smile wrinkles
  • Crow’s feet near the eyes

BOCOUTURE® Indications

BOCOUTURE® is recommended for individuals above 25 and below 65. It’s not advisable for patients outside of this age range, as it can have adverse effects.

BOCOUTURE® should not be used in:

  • Individuals with known hypersensitivity or allergy to botulinum toxin type A or any of the ingredients in BOCOUTURE®
  • Patients with muscle disorders (e.g., myasthenia gravis or Lambert-Eaton syndrome). These may be at an increased risk of systemic adverse effects.
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women, as the safety of BOCOUTURE® in these populations has not been studied

BOCOUTURE® Administration Technique

BOCOUTURE® is supplied in single-use vials containing a sterile, vacuum-dried powder. Each vial typically contains 50 or 100 units of BOCOUTURE®, reconstituted with preservative-free 1.25 mL of unpreserved sodium chloride 9 mg/ml (0.9%) solution prior to administration.

Here is an overview of the administration process:

  • Identify the target muscles for treatment based on the patient’s aesthetic goals and facial anatomy
  • Cleanse the injection sites with an alcohol swab
  • Use an appropriate needle size and injection technique to deliver precise doses of BOCOUTURE® into the targeted muscles
  • Avoid intravascular injection by aspirating the syringe before injection
  • Inject superficially into the muscle belly.
  • Maintain proper anatomical landmarks to ensure accurate placement of injections

As for the dosage, you’ll need to determine it as per the patient’s treatment goals and muscle mass. The recommended initial dose for most facial indications is typically 10-20 units per treatment session.

Here’s a quick dosage guide for BOCOUTURE® injections:

  • Vertical Frown Lines – 4 unites into 5 sites. Maximum initial total dosage – 20 units.
  • Crow’s Feet – 4 units bilaterally into 3 sites. Maximum initial total dosage – 12 units for each eye
  • Horizontal Forehead Lines – 10-20 units into 5 sites. Maximum initial total dosage – 10 – 20 units.

Ensure that the maximum dose per treatment session and frequency of treatments adhere to established guidelines to minimize the risk of adverse effects.

BOCOUTURE® Side Effects

BOCOUTURE® gained popularity because it contains less complex proteins. This means it has a lower risk of antibody formation or allergic reactions.

Still, some common side effects that you could anticipate are:

  • Injection site reactions: Patients may experience temporary redness, swelling, bruising, or pain at the injection site. These reactions typically resolve within a few days after treatment.
  • Headache: Some patients may develop mild to moderate headaches following BOCOUTURE® injections, which usually resolve spontaneously within a few days.

Hypersensitive patients may also face ptosis, which is characterized by transient eyelid drooping. It occurs due to the spread of botulinum toxin to nearby muscles, particularly when treating the glabellar region. This usually resolves spontaneously within a few weeks.

BOCOUTURE® vs. The Competition

Before you buy BOCOUTURE® wholesale and offer it to your clientele, we highly recommend learning about its competitors. These include:

  1. Botox

Botox functions by blocking the release of acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction. This inhibition prevents muscle contraction, reducing the appearance of wrinkles formed by repetitive facial expressions. The effects typically last around three to four months before re-administration is necessary.

  1. Dysport

This competitor works similarly to Botox by impeding the release of acetylcholine at nerve endings and leading to temporary muscle relaxation. Its formulation allows for diffusion over a broader area, potentially resulting in more widespread effects compared to Botox.

Studies suggest that Dysport may have a quicker onset of action and a longer duration of effect in some individuals.
