GARDASIL® is used to prevent diseases caused by HPV types 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52 and 58. It can prevent anal intraepithelial neoplasia (a precancerous condition of the anus) as well as anal cancer. In women, GARDASIL® is used to prevent precancerous lesions and cancer of the cervix, vulva, and vagina. It can also reduce the risk of condyloma acuminata (also called anogenital warts). GARDASIL® does not eliminate the need for vaccine recipients to undergo screening for vulvar, anal, vaginal, and cervical cancers as recommended by doctors. It is also important to note that GARDASIL® is used for prevention, not cure. It does not protect against diseases caused by:
- HPV types not covered by the vaccine
- HPV infection to which a person has been exposed prior to the vaccine
How Does GARDASIL® Work?
GARDASIL® works by causing the body to produce antibodies against the HPV. All papillomaviruses have a shell (or a capsid) that is made up of proteins called L1 proteins. GARDASIL® contains purified L1 proteins for specific HPV types, which are produced by recombinant DNA technology. The proteins are assembled in virus-like particles (structures that look like HPV), which trigger the body to produce antibodies against the L1 protein. These virus-like particles in GARDASIL® are not capable of causing infection. But once they enter the body, the immune system can produce antibodies more quickly if it is exposed to the real HPV in the future. It usually takes the body several weeks after the vaccination to start developing protection and full protection requires completion of the vaccine series. What Are the Side Effects of GARDASIL®?
