What Is JAYDESS® Used For?
JAYDESS® is an intrauterine device consisting of a hormone capsule attached to a T-shaped frame made from a soft flexible plastic. The device is 30 mm long and is inserted inside the uterus. This contraceptive prevents pregnancy by slowly releasing a low dose of the progestogen hormone levonorgestrel (13.5 mg) locally in the uterus, daily, for up to 3 years. How does JAYDESS® Work?
When it is inserted in the uterus, a low dose of the hormone levonorgestrel is released slowly and continuously on a daily basis. It prevents pregnancy in three ways:- It makes the cervical mucus thick that obstructs the passage of sperm.
- It affects endometrial growth. The mucus membrane becomes thin and infertile.
- It contributes to an unfavourable environment for the sperm in the uterus and the fallopian tubes.
How long does JAYDESS® last?
As we have already mentioned, JAYDESS® lasts up to 3 years to prevent pregnancy. It is usually placed within 7 days of the start of the patient’s monthly period and immediately providing more than 99% efficacy. It is advised that healthcare professionals follow-up with their patients once in the first 4 do 6 weeks after having JAYDESS® placed. After the first check-up, it is recommended that you should follow-up with your patients on a yearly basis. What to Expect When Using JAYDESS®?
It is very common for periods to change after the patient starts using JAYDESS®. In the first few months of use, patients may experience spotting, shorter or longer periods, or irregular bleeding. Over time, the number of bleeding or spotting days per month should decrease. Some patents eventually stop bleeding since JAYDESS® may stop the monthly growth of the lining of the uterus, although it is less likely due to this contraceptive having a lower hormone dose. When JAYDESS® is removed, periods are expected to return to their previous pattern.JAYDESS® Side Effects
