Glaucoma is a condition that can result in blindness due to the death of retinal ganglion cells. It is caused by high pressure in the eye. Intraocular hypertension is characterized by intraocular pressure that is higher than average and glaucoma is a disease in which fluid does not drain out of the eye, so the pressure is increased. Located between the cornea and the iris lies the anterior chamber. This hole contains trabecular meshwork, a spongy tissue through which water drains from the eye. The trabecular meshwork sometimes blocks fluid and prevents it from returning to the bloodstream, increasing intraocular pressure. Normal eye pressure is considered 11 to 21 millimeters of mercury (mmHg), so if the patient's ocular pressure is higher than 21 mmHg in one or both eyes at two or more tonometries, it might be a sign of ocular hypertension. Research shows that high intraocular pressure leads to glaucoma, which also increases the risk of blindness. In open-angle glaucoma, the increase in pressure is often slow and not so high. In closed-angle glaucoma, the increase is often sudden and high. These medications work by reducing intraocular pressure (IOP), a significant risk factor associated with glaucoma. During the conducted study, LUMIGAN® eye drops proved to be more effective than the following substances: LUMIGAN® 0.3 mg/ml was more effective than timolol at reducing eye pressure. After three months, eye pressure was lowered by 7.4 mmHg in the group that was treated with LUMIGAN®, compared with 3.6 mmHg in the group that was taking placebo. Also, it was more effective than latanoprost with a reduction in eye pressure of 6.0 to 8.2 mmHg after six months of treatment.LUMIGAN® Dosage
LUMIGAN® is available in 0,1 and 0,3 mg/ml. The recommended dose is one drop in the affected eye(s) once a day in the evening. If patients use more than one type of eye drop, each one should be given at least five minutes apart.Are There Any Side Effects of LUMIGAN® Eye Drops?
The most common adverse effect of LUMIGAN® occurring in more than 1 in 10 patients is conjunctival hyperemia, characterized by increased blood flow to the eye causing redness.- Patients who are allergic to bimatoprost or its components should avoid LUMIGAN®
