What Is SAXENDA® Used For?
Curious about how SAXENDA® injection works? The body naturally produces a hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), so basically SAXENDA® mimics the action of that natural appetite hormone. This mechanism can lead to reduced calorie intake and helps with weight loss.Important Considerations for SAXENDA® Use
As a healthcare provider, it's crucial to discuss the following points with your patients regarding SAXENDA®:- SAXENDA® and Victoza® contain the same active ingredient, liraglutide. Patients should not use them together or with other medications belonging to the GLP-1 receptor agonist class.
- The safety and effectiveness of SAXENDA® when taken along side other prescription medication drugs, over-the-counter medications, or herbal weight loss products are not fully understood.
- SAXENDA®'s safety and effectiveness haven't been established in children under 12 years of age. Additionally, its safety and efficacy in children aged 12 to 17 years with type 2 diabetes is not known.
How Is SAXENDA® Injected?
SAXENDA® is a once-daily, self-injectable medicine provided in a prefilled pen. As a healthcare provider, ensure to demonstrate the correct injection technique for SAXENDA® to your patients or their guardians. SAXENDA® is a subcutaneous injection. It is injected under the skin in the stomach area (abdomen), upper leg (thigh), or upper arm. SAXENDA® is not to be injected into a vein or muscle. The initial dosage of SAXENDA® is 0.6 mg per day for the first week, gradually increasing each week until reaching the prescribed 3 mg dose. Teens may be advised to decrease their SAXENDA® dose to 2.4 mg daily if the maximum dose is not well tolerated. This SAXENDA® dose is intended to reduce gastrointestinal side effects. If SAXENDA® weight loss treatment begins with a sample pen, a prescription will be necessary to complete the dose escalation. Once the 3 mg SAXENDA® dose is started, each pen lasts 6 days. Injection can be taken at any time, independent of meals. It's best to take SAXENDA® at the same time every day, at a time that's convenient and easy to remember. It's important to emphasize to your patients not to share SAXENDA® pens for safety and hygiene reasons. How To Store SAXENDA®?
New, unused SAXENDA® pens should be refrigerated at temperatures between 36°F and 46°F. Once the pen is used for the first time, SAXENDA® can be stored in the refrigerator or at room temperature, maintaining a range between 59°F and 86°F. Discard pens that have been in use for more than 30 days, even if there is SAXENDA® remaining. Avoid freezing SAXENDA®, and do not use it if it has been frozen. The SAXENDA® pen is designed to be used with Novo Nordisk disposable needles, which are sold separately and may require a prescription in certain states. Novo Nordisk cannot ensure compatibility with needles from other manufacturers because only Novo Nordisk needles have been tested with the pen.SAXENDA® Side Effects
What to know before you purchase SAXENDA®? As a medical professional, you may advise patients that nausea is one of the common side effects when starting SAXENDA® treatment for weight loss, but it typically diminishes over time as the body adjusts to the medication. If your adult or teen patient experiences side effects such as nausea from SAXENDA® use, consider the following recommendations. Recommend them to:- Eat bland, low-fat foods (crackers, toast, and rice)
- Consume foods with high water content, such as soups
- Avoid lying down immediately after eating.
- Take short walks outside to get some fresh air
