What Is ProliaⓇ Used For?

Prolia® (generic name: denosumab) offers a targeted approach to inhibit bone-resorbing cells and reduce the risk of fracture. Administered as a subcutaneous injection every 6 months, Prolia® not only proves effective in strengthening bones and increasing bone density but also significantly reduces the incidence of spine, hip, and other fractures.  However, it's crucial for healthcare professionals to thoroughly grasp its mechanism of action and contraindications especially in populations at high risk.

Indications: For Which Patient Groups Should You Purchase This Product?

Prolia® is a prescription medication designed to address osteoporosis-related needs in a variety of patient populations. Besides prescribing for postmenopausal women with a primary diagnosis of osteoporosis, particularly those at high risk for fractures or who do not respond well to other osteoporosis treatments, Prolia® has its benefits for men with osteoporosis, too.  In addition, Prolia® is important for men and women who anticipate long-term use of corticosteroids to prevent bone loss and fractures in particular, men treated for prostate cancer or women treated for breast cancer, improving overall treatment outcomes and quality of life for these patients.

Evidence From the Real World Study

As controlled clinical trials help us learn about medication but may not represent what happens in the real world of medical care, researchers gather evidence from real life situations. Such a comprehensive real world study was conducted from 2012 to 2019 and impressive information was collected during that period.

This Brand vs. Competition

The largest real world study about postmenopausal osteoporosis showed that compared to alendronate (Fosamax), Prolia® lowered the overall risk of major osteoporotic fracture by 39%. The findings show that the risk of major osteoporotic fracture was 10.5% for women taking ProliaⓇ compared to 17.2% for women who took alendronate (known as Fosamax).

Administration Technique

Healthcare professionals should administer ProliaⓇ as a single 60 mg subcutaneous injection once every 6 months, with injection sites typically in the upper arm, upper thigh, or abdomen. All patients should receive daily supplementation of 1000 mg calcium and at least 400 IU vitamin D. In the event of a missed dose, ProliaⓇ should be administered as soon as possible, with subsequent injections scheduled every 6 months from the date of the last injection. Prior to administration, the injection should be removed from the refrigerator and brought to room temperature (up to 25°C/77°F) by standing in the original container. This generally takes 15 to 30 minutes. Do not warm the medication in any other way. Learn more about detailed prescribing information.

Side Effects: Considerations Before You Purchase Online

Discuss a patient's medical history before initiating including ProliaⓇ in treatment of osteoporosis. ProliaⓇ (generic name: denosumab), a medication prescribed for various conditions, including osteoporosis, presents important considerations for patients. One notable concern is the potential for decreased blood calcium levels, especially in those predisposed to low calcium or with advanced chronic kidney disease, which may require pre-treatment measures.  Additionally, serious allergic reactions, severe jaw issues, and uncommon thigh bone fractures have been linked to ProliaⓇ usage, underlining the necessity for regular monitoring and open communication with healthcare providers. Also, the medication may weaken the body's immune response, particularly in individuals with compromised immune systems. Besides, patients should not stop using calcium and vitamin D until you as a healthcare provider advise them to.
